I was admiring some Roy Crane Captain Easy comics, and I particularly liked some of his drawings of women. He clearly had a grasp on realistic anatomy, and was able to distill it down to just a few perfect lines. I can see how he was an influence on the great Jaime Hernandez. The women in Crane’s stories, unfortunately, tend to be of the slave girl/damsel-in-distress variety, not terribly strong characters, but the strength of the drawing can’t be denied. I did some quick cribs of his ladies, but they might as well have been drawn by a monkey, compared to Crane. Think I might spend some real time copying, even tracing his panels for practice. He drew everything amazingly, not just women.
